Now that you are interested in quoting a solar panel system you have surely wondered why companies request your electricity bill to make a quote. The answer to this is simple, your electricity bill is the document in which your solar company can know all the details about your energy consumption, and with this:

  • The rate you’re in.
  • Your total bi-monthly consumption.
  • Your daily average in kWh.
  • Annual consumption.

Once your solar panel company has this information, the following is to make a quote for your consumption of the last 6 bimesters (all year).

Why is it necessary to know my energy consumption of the last 6 bimesters?

Do you feel uncomfortable that a company can have access to your electricity consumption information and don’t understand why it is necessary for them to know these details? Don’t worry, we’ll tell you the reason:

Your annual average is vital information to know the average amount of KWh that your household consumes bi-monthly. With this information the company will be able to make a personalized quotation, in which the amount of solar panels that you will need will be taken into account, as well as the capacity of these they must have.

Stay away from companies that tell you that:

  1. Your electricity bill is not necessary to make a quote for solar panels.
  2. You need a generic amount of solar panels because that’s the amount of panels that houses like yours need.

The quotes must be personalized taking into account the electricity needs of each household. Maybe your house needs 8 solar panels to cover the consumption demand of kWh, but your neighbor's needs up to 12 solar panels, and therefore, the price will be different.

How is calculated the average consumption of the last 6 bimesters?

Your average consumption is obtained:

  • Adding the total bimonthly consumption of your last 6 receipts.
  • Dividing this total between 6.
  • You get the average kWh that your home is consuming bi-monthly.

However, if when analyzing your receipts you find that the consumption increased from 1,000 kWh to 2,500 or 3,000 kWh, then the company that quotes you should take into account this change and it would be pertinent to use the last 2 or 3 receipts of higher consumption of energy, since you probably started using some equipment more or installed some new air conditioning.

It’s important to emphasize that this action is taken, not in order to make a more expensive quote, but in order to obtain a real and proper calculation that includes the number of panels that your home really needs and in the long run, saving the highest percentage of consumption to CFE.

As you can see, the information contained in your electricity bill is important for the price of a solar panel system. The quote method may vary depending on your provider, so you can always ask to be explained in detail how they’re making a quote, in this way you ensure that the solar company does not engage in dishonest practices.
